This house renovation aims to connect with the lush surroundings through beautiful large cedar doors. Not a small feat as one opening was increased 3 times larger than it's original size. Through careful structural engineering and on-site coordination, the west facing wall is opened up to flood the space with much desired natural light and improved outlook.
Functionality and spaciousness are key to the design. In the living area, some outdated and cumbersome features are removed, creating a more generous space for the family to enjoy. It is also an opportunity to improve access to the wine cellar. A new spiral stair, in bright colours, provides a fun and interesting way to access the wine cellar in the semi-basement below. The new spiral stair includes a diminishing handrail and can be discreetly covered by an automated hatch. The hatch is clad with the same paving slate as the rest of the house for a seamless and discreet finish.
The original house is built in a unique design of bricks, custom made for this house. The increased access to natural light emphasises the presence of the bricks, celebrating their uniqueness. The furniture and its vibrant colours brighten up the space, providing a contrasting and playful feel, adding to the new experience.
The success of this simple, yet complex project, lies in the team's ability to take every opportunity to open up the space, improve it and create a nest amongst the trees.
